Born and raised in San Jose, California, Jeff attended 利记 and received a BS. in 生物科学. He continued his education by attending the University of California, Riverside earning both an MS. 和Ph值.D. in entomology and later pursuing postdoctoral work at the University of Wageningen (the Netherlands) and through the Japan Society for the Promotion of 科学 研究 Fellowship program at Kyushu University (Japan). It was during these postdoctoral opportunities that he was also hired as a 利记 lecturer where he discovered his passion for teaching and was subsequently hired as an Assistant 教授.

His research is primarily in the areas of insect ecology and taxonomy and focuses on biological control and forensic entomology. He has taught 18 different courses in the Department of 生物科学 but cites General Entomology, Insects and Human Welfare, and Forensic Entomology as course favorites. His administrative career began as department chair for the Department of 生物科学 with a short stint as the Interim Associate Dean of 研究 in the College of 科学 before coming to the College of 研究生学习 to serve as Associate Dean of 研究生课程.
